NRA fined with BGN 5.1 million for personal data leakage

Bulgarian data protection authority announced that it had completed its investigation into the NRA over a breach of personal data security affecting over 5 million Bulgarian citizens.

The fine of the National Revenue Agency for the leakage of personal data of millions of Bulgarians amounts to BGN 5.1 million.

Bulgarian DPA fines bank €500,000 for data breach

Bulgaria’s data protection authority (DPA) – Commission for Personal Data Protection – has imposed a 1 million levs (about 500,000 euro) fine on DSK Bank for a data breach that impacted upon more than 33,000 of its clients.

During the course of its month-long investigation the DPA has found that DSK Bank did not apply the relevant technical and organisational measures in order to ensure the protection of the personal data of individuals and third persons connected to them.

Bulgaria’s new data protection law enters into force

Bulgaria’s GDPR implementing law entered into force on 2 March 2019. The Law on Amending and Supplementing the Law on Personal Data Protection (LASLPDP) modernises the original data Protection Act from 2002. The law also transposes the Law Enforcement Directive.

Data Protection Act vetoed by Bulgarian President

Bulgaria’s head of state has sent a provision of the Law on Amendments and Supplements to the Personal Data Protection Act back to parliament for renewed debate. The action has been taken by president Radev due to opposition to Article 26 of the Act, which relates to the processing of personal data for journalism, academia and literary expression.

The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation took another step towards being integrated into Bulgarian law last week, when MPs in Sofia gave the green light to the second and final reading of changes to the nation’s data protection legislation.

Bulgarian DPA introduces 10-step action plan for GDPR implementation

In the light of the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation (the “GDPR”) implementation in May 2018, the Bulgarian Personal Data Protection Commission introduced an action plan during the 15 November 2017 regular session of the Commission.
