Facebook, LinkedIn Sued For ‘Eavesdropping’ On Zoom Users

Facebook and LinkedIn have been secretly harvesting personal information from Zoom users to boost their revenues, according to a putative class action filed in California federal court Monday that targets both the social media sites and the newly ubiquitous video conferencing platform.

The newly filed lawsuit echoes many of these allegations against Zoom, while also drawing in social media giants Facebook Inc. and LinkedIn Corp., which plaintiff Todd Hurvitz claims “eavesdropped” on what Zoom users thought were private communications between them and the company’s servers in order to scoop up valuable personal information.

Startup HiQ Labs may collect data from people’s LinkedIn profiles, court rules

Company called HiQ Labs wins court OK to scrape profiles on LinkedIn for data about people’s lives and connections.

LinkedIn invoked a federal anti-hacking law in telling HiQ to stop. It also installed technical blocks to prevent HiQ from accessing otherwise publicly available information on LinkedIn users. A 2017 ruling ordered LinkedIn to stop blocking the startup. LinkedIn appealed, but lost.

Just days after the new law comes into force, privacy activists add more tech giants to their list of GDPR targets.¬†French digital rights group La Quadrature du Net hasn’t just gone after Google and Facebook. It’s pursuing Apple, Amazon, and LinkedIn as well.
