FTC Issues Annual Data Privacy Report for 2017

On Jan. 18, 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) published its Annual Privacy and Data Security Update. The update is helpful to businesses in that it recaps the efforts and areas of involvement the FTC has targeted in the past year as well as guides data protection strategies for 2018.

Dutch companies not ready for GDPR despite approaching deadline

Companies in the Netherlands are only partly ready for the country’s version of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) after specific regulations for the Netherlands were released by a privacy watchdog.

Global Data Privacy Snapshot 2018

How DPA Budget and Staffing Levels Mirror National Differences in GDP and Population

This IAPP Westin Research Center report analyzes privacy regulators’ budget and staffing levels. Using data from the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners’ Census 2017, the analysis reveals that data protection authorities in North America have larger budgets and more staff than their counterparts around the world.

NIST Issues Draft Report on Blockchain

In January of 2018, NIST issued a roughly 60- page Draft NIST Interagency Report (NISTIR) 8202: Blockchain Technology Overview . The report offers a straightforward introduction to blockchain, which underpins Bitcoin and other digital currencies. “We want to help people understand how blockchains work so that they can appropriately and usefully apply them to technology problems,” said Dylan Yaga, a NIST computer scientist who is one of the report’s authors. “It’s an introduction to the things you should understand and think about if you want to use blockchain.” A blockchain is essentially a decentralized ledger that maintains transaction records on many computers simultaneously.
