South Korean regulator fines TikTok over mishandling child data

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC), the country’s telecommunications watchdog, said it has fined the company 186 million won — around $155,000 — for failing to protect users’ private data.

The Korea Communications Commission said the Chinese company collected the data of children without consent from their legal guardians.

EU approaching adequacy deals with Japan and Korea

The EU is currently finalising a trade agreement with Japan – a process that began in March 2015. Since then, data protection concerns have gained currency in the EU and efforts are now made to ensure that future trade deals will go hand-in-hand with sufficient protection.┬áJapan’s law requires Japan to also find the EU’s data protection regime “adequate.”

South Korea to consider adopting US-style data-sharing regulation

South Korea’s financial regulator said Thursday it will consider gradually adopting US-style data-sharing regulation to make it easier for firms to collect and use personal information.

The move is aimed at meeting rising demand for new technologies such as the Internet of Things and big data analytics, the Financial Services Commission said in a statement.
