Zoom plans to roll out strong encryption for paying customers

Video conferencing provider Zoom plans to strengthen encryption of video calls hosted by paying clients and institutions such as schools, but not by users of its free consumer accounts, a company official said on Friday.

A combination of technological, safety and business factors went into the plan, which drew mixed reactions from privacy advocates.

Zoom Agrees to Step Up Security After New York Probe

New York state’s top prosecutor announces that the company Zoom would improve security measures, after flaws were detected as the video conferencing platform soared in popularity amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The agreement wraps an investigation launched in March by New York Attorney General Letitia James into vulnerabilities in the California-based company’s software.¬†In a statement, James said Zoom would institute new security measures for the millions of users using the platform, including enhanced privacy controls.

Hackers Are Selling a Critical Zoom Zero-Day Exploit for $500,000

People who trade in zero-day exploits say there are two Zoom zero-days, one for Windows and one for MacOS, on the market.

Zero-day exploits are unknown vulnerabilities in software or hardware that hackers can take advantage of to hack targets. The zero-day for Zoom on Windows would allow hackers to access the app, but would need to be coupled with another bug to access the whole machine.

Facebook, LinkedIn Sued For ‘Eavesdropping’ On Zoom Users

Facebook and LinkedIn have been secretly harvesting personal information from Zoom users to boost their revenues, according to a putative class action filed in California federal court Monday that targets both the social media sites and the newly ubiquitous video conferencing platform.

The newly filed lawsuit echoes many of these allegations against Zoom, while also drawing in social media giants Facebook Inc. and LinkedIn Corp., which plaintiff Todd Hurvitz claims “eavesdropped” on what Zoom users thought were private communications between them and the company’s servers in order to scoop up valuable personal information.

Irish data protection commissioner liaises with European colleagues over Zoom concerns

The Data Protection Commission (DPC), the Irish data supervisory authority headed up by Helen Dixon, has asked other data protection authorities for information regarding Zoom, the US-based video conferencing system.

A move by the DPC to speak with partners across Europe about Zoom follows reports globally of data breaches, where third parties were accessing or hacking into conference calls.
